Ask any Banshee owner about carb syncing and watch their face change. Some call it black magic. Others call it the reason their quad finally runs right. Either way, if you are stepping away from the stock TORS system and into a real dual-carb setup, syncing is not optional. It is the difference between a Banshee that rips and one that bogs, surges, or fouls plugs every other ride.
Getting both cylinders pulling in perfect harmony starts with eliminating factory restrictions and equalizing intake draw across both carbs.
Ditching TORS & The Science of Slide Balance
The factory Throttle Override System (TORS) was Yamaha’s emissions-compliant safety net, not a performance feature. It restricts full slide travel and adds bulky linkage that complicates your intake.
Ripping out TORS and converting to a true dual-cable pull gives your thumbs direct control over both slides. But it also places the burden of synchronization entirely on you.
On a twin-cylinder two-stroke like the Banshee, both cylinders must pull air and fuel in exact lockstep. If one slide opens even a fraction of a millimeter ahead of the other, that cylinder takes the lead, causing an uneven power pulse, lopey idle, and loaded-up plugs.
Riders frequently blame needle clip positions or pilot jetting for poor response when the actual culprit is slide timing between the two carbs.
Using a Sync Tool the Right Way
A carb sync tool measures airflow or vacuum delta between each carb throat while the engine idles.
Here is the basic process most builders follow.
- Warm the engine to normal operating temperature before adjusting anything
- Connect the sync tool gauges to both intake ports
- Watch the readings while the engine idles in neutral
- Adjust the idle screws or linkage until both gauges match
- Blip the throttle and confirm both slides return to sync at idle
Small adjustments matter here. Turning an idle screw a quarter turn can shift the reading more than you expect. Go slow, recheck often, and do not walk away thinking one pass is enough. Heat cycles and cable stretch will pull carbs out of sync over time, so plan to recheck after your first few rides on a fresh setup.

Stock Mikuni 26mm vs Keihin PWK Upgrades
Stock Mikuni 26mm carbs get the job done, but they were never built for aggressive porting or big-bore work. Once you start pushing more air through the engine, those small bores become a bottleneck.
Keihin PWK carbs solve that in two ways. First, they flow more air at 28mm or 33mm, which matches better with ported cylinders and aftermarket pipes. Second, the flat slide design gives sharper throttle response than the round slide in a stock Mikuni. You feel the difference the moment you crack the throttle.
Jetting is another reason riders make the switch. PWK carbs use a more straightforward jetting circuit, and parts are easier to source than trying to hunt down obscure Mikuni jet kits. A 28mm PWK is a strong middle ground for a mildly built engine, while a 33mm setup suits a big-bore or heavily ported build chasing serious top end.
Whichever size you choose, syncing still applies. Bigger bores do not fix a mismatched idle. If anything, larger carbs make sync issues more obvious, since any imbalance shows up faster under load.
Bringing It All Together
Dropping TORS and stepping up to Keihin PWK carbs opens the door to real performance gains on a Banshee.
