The shape of that dome decides exactly how efficient that battle is.
A stock head was built for one job: survive on pump gas without blowing up. That means a conservative dome shape, a loose squish gap, and a chamber volume that keeps compression low enough for 87 octane to behave. Safe, but nowhere near optimized.

Squish Gap: The Difference Between Smooth Power & a Melted Piston
Squish gap is the tight clearance between the piston crown and the head at top dead center. As the piston rises, that gap forces the air-fuel mixture out toward the spark plug in a fast, turbulent rush.
A tighter squish gap does two things.

Both mean a cleaner, more complete burn. But tighten that gap too much on the wrong fuel and you're asking for detonation. That uncontrolled secondary explosion hammers the piston crown and can take out a ring land in one bad pull. Squish gap and octane have to match, every time.
Remember, the squish degree on the dome MUST match the squish degree on the piston! Unmatched, you are losing HP and performance!
Swap Fuel, Swap the Dome, Not the Whole Head
Here's the part most riders don't realize until they've already bought a race gas head they didn't need. Your cylinder head's chamber volume (measured in CCs) sets your compression ratio. Shrink the CCs and compression climbs. But if you climb too far without the right fuel to back it up, you get pinging, heat spikes, and eventually a cooked piston.
